Reports of severe, sudden headaches and stroke are increasing- and according to recent studies, the increase has been linked to combining certain popular drugs.
Headaches and brain changes occurred in at least three people at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The patients had taken two or more drugs that affected serotonin levels. Researchers found serotonin over-load in the body.
Serotonin, a chemical messenger, is found in the brain and throughout the body. Antidepressants increase serotonin levels, while other drugs cause the chemical to rise as a side effect.
When serotonin levels increase in the body, blood vessels constrict; when this occurs in blood vessels in the brain, headaches and strokes can result from the lack of oxygen and nutrients.
Some of the drugs that affect serotonin levels include:
· Newer antidepressants: Celexa, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft; which are called SSSRIs- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors.
· Tripans (migraine medications): Amerage, Axert, Imitrex, zomig.
· Diet pills
· Amphetamines
· Some herbal supplements: St. Johns Wort (used to treat depression.)
· Illicit drugs; ecstasy, cocaine, and methamphetamines.
