CHIROPRACTIC COMPARED TO THE COST OF MEDICAL CARE

1 Jun 1993

According to a recent study, a significant cost-saving potential is suggested amongst users of Chiropractic care.

The study, published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, compared the health care costs of patients who have received Chiropractic treatment for common neuromusculoskeletal disorders with patients who sought treatment from medical and osteopathatic physicians.

Data from 395,641 patients with one or more of 493 neuromusculoskeletal ICD-9 codes were used in the study.

Results showed that 25% of the patients with one ormore of 493 neuromusculoskeletal ICD-9 codes were used in the study.

Results showed that 25% of the patients had been treated by chiropractic- and those patients experienced significantly lower health care costs.

Total cost difference over the 2-year-period were found amongst all participating patients as well as in a sample of patients with specific disorders.
