Eye cancer is three times more likely to develop among people who regularly use cell phones, according to a current study published in the journal Epidemiology.
Researches explained that cell phones emit a radiation that modifies how brain cells work, a fact that had been known for some time. However, this was the first study to indicate cell phone use result sin permanent health damage to users.
Researchers from the University of Essex, Germany, studied uveal melanoma, a form of eye cense, where tumors form in the layer that makes up the iris and base of the retina.
Dr. Anderas Stang, leaders of the study, said 118 people with uveal melanoma and 475 people without cancer, who were all regular cell phone users were study. Researchers were not aware of which subjects had cancer and which subjects did not.
Results showed cancer victims had a significant higher rate of mobile phone use, which researchers believe could be attributed to the watery contents of the eye which helps absorb radiation.
Precious studies show cells in the uveal layer, once exposed to radiation, begin to grown and divide more quickly. And, because this type of cancer beings inside these cells, researchers believe this ready-made mechanism could help start the cancer.
Before this year, no evidence was found to link these phones to cancers or other disorders, but as of last month, multi-billion dollar lawsuits were brought against Verizon Horizon, whose customers claimed to go brain tumors form using the devices.
Stang noted that further studies needed to be confirm these finding.
