According to a recent study, the incidence of kidney stone formation increases in those who sleep on one side more than the other.
Researchers from the University of California at San Francisco studied patients with recurrent kidney stones to determine whether sleeping posture could have an effect on the formation of kidney stones.
100 patients participated in the study; of which, 93 patients consistently slept to one side. 76% of the stones were found on the dependent side; the side which patients consistently slept on.
Results showed that 82% of patients with stones on the right side, consistently slept with their right side down. 70% with stones on the left side, consistently slept with their left side down.
According to researchers, this correlation could exist because blood flow may be sluggish to the dependent side while sleeping, which slows the crystals to form, thus resulting in the stones.
Due to the results of the study, people with recurrent kidney stone should frequently change sleeping positions to diminish the occurrence of kidney stone formation.
