Calcium Supplements Can Reduce The Symptoms Of PMS

According to a recent study, calcium supplements are effective in treating the symptoms of PMS.

466 women suffering with various symptoms of PMS participated in the study,  Each woman kept a record of 17 symptoms of PMS (including mood swings, crying spells, bloating, food cravings, and headaches) every day for three months.

During the three-month period, 50% of the women took 1,200 mg of calcium supplements each day; the remaining women were give placebos.

By the third month, the average symptom score had fallen 52% among women taking calcium, verses the 35% drop among the women taking the placebo.

Results showed that 55% of the women taking calcium reported their symptoms had improved by 50% while only 36% of the placebo-taking women improved to that degree; 29% of the calcium group experienced at least a 75% improvement, 16% of placebo-takers improved to that degree.

Eight percent of the calcium group got worse, but 24% experienced worsened symptoms among the placebo group.

Calcium was also found to relieve all four major categories of PMS symptoms: negative mood (depression, anger and mood swings), water retention, food cravings, and pain (cramping and low back pain.)
