Cow’s Milk Leads To Infantile Colic

If an infant is experiencing bouts of inconsolable crying, which last for three hours or more, three or more days a week for periods exceeding three weeks, the infant had colic.

In a study designed to determine effective alternative treatments for colic, cow’s milk was found to be a major cause of the symptoms of colic.

43 infants with colic were given regular formula milk or a whey formula, which was made from a byproduct of cheese manufacturing, for a period of one week.  Changes were documented at 10-minute intervals.

Results show that infants receiving the whey formula cried about 63 minutes less per day than infants who had received the regular milk formula.

Study authors concluded that substituting cow’s milk formula with an hydrolyzed whey formula is effective in treating infantile colic.
